Pandemic and The New Way of Business
The pandemic has come and is pretty much still around. The lockdown crippled some businesses that couldn’t operate remotely, and post-lockdow they simple had no more leverage to operate and had to shut down permanently Recently Nike announced that they were going online for sales and will be closing their stores, thereby making lots of its employees unemployed. Other businesses are following suit and very soon the pool of unemployed individuals will be so much that the government will have to do something about it. Cineworld for example are closing its cinemas both in the UK and US due to lack of new movies to stream.
The new industrial revolution
Since the start of the pandemic way back in march 2020, there has been a massive increase and shift towards home working. Just as the previous industrial revolution came to stay and changed the business landscape, this new shift is seen as the next one. A lot of businesses were suddenly thrusted into a sink or swim situation with a lot of them swimming in the face of adversity. Businesses were forced to quickly adopt the work from home way to survive the pandemic. And to the surprise of most what has been discovered is that employees do not have to physically be in a particular location which in this instance is the “office” for some business activities to be carried out. The use of virtual meetings applications increased tremendously most especially “zoom” that it became an everyday phrase. We started to hear people saying “lets jump on a zoom”. And the zoom phenomenon didn’t just apply only to the work setting, but due to the lockdown people started having meetups via zoom including parties, webinars, and schools used it for online learning.
What businesses need to do to survive
With business being carried out via the internet the push is now to ensure there is confidentiality, integrity, and authorisation of information and data transmitted. Businesses now need to invest in cyber security as a priority to ensure they are safe from prying eyes online. So the money saved by ditching offices should be wisely invested in making information safe. Cyber crime can be a huge stumbling block to the progress of businesses, but being one step ahead of the cyber criminals will make a massive difference by investing in information security. Once this is achievable then this industrial revolution is well and truly here to stay.
